Michael Greyeyes (True Detective) has joined the cast of Blumhouse’s new adaptation of Stephen King’s Firestarter. The actor will portray John Rainbird, previously portrayed on the screen by George C. Scott.
First published in 1980, Firestarter tells the story of young Charlie McGee, a powerful girl gifted with the ability of pyrokinesis. Charlie came by her powers due to her parents’ participation in experiments run by the mysterious Shop, a government entity that operates largely off the books. Charlie’s father Andy walked away from those experiments with the ability to control the minds of others to an extent while her mother, Victoria, developed some minor telekinetic abilities.
When the Shop discovers Charlie’s abilities, they kidnap her with the intent of weaponizing her gifts.
Among those on the Shop’s payroll is John Rainbird, a paid hitman who covets Charlie’s gifts and considers the privilege of killing her as tantamount to challenging the power of the Gods.
Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) has adapted Firestarter for the screen and Keith Thomas (The Vigil) is set to direct the feature.
Greyeyes comes to the project with an impressive background as an actor, director, choreographer, and scholar. He recently starred in Wild Indian which was just featured as part of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. More of his recent credits include True Detective, I Know This Much is True, and Blood Quantum which centers on a world torn apart by a zombie apocalypse save for an isolated Mi’kmaq tribe on the Red Crow reservation which is inexplicably immune.
Honestly, this is brilliant casting, and the actor will no doubt shine in the role.
Firestarter is produced by Jason Blum and Akiva Goldman along with Martha de Laurentiis as executive producer.
