Over the weekend, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted hit the stage as the frontman for his solo metal project, aptly named Newsted. It had been roughly a decade since that outfit last got together, but with original members drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. (Underlord), and guitarist Jessie Farnsworth (Underlord) and new guitarist Humberto Perez taking Staind guitarist Mike Mushok’s spot, they played a headlining show at Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s Revolution Live.
For weeks leading up to the show, Newsted made the rounds, promising that there would be “no cheating” like backing tracks at the performance. And throughout the band’s 20 song set, that was the case. As you can see in the gathered clips below, Newsted led the band through some of their previously released songs off of Heavy Metal Music, including “Soldierhead” and “…As the Crow Flies,” while fleshing out the setlist with some nods to Metallica, roughly 11 new tracks, and their rendition of classic songs like Motörhead’s “(We Are) The Road Crew” and Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold.” In fact, most of the setlist was tracks the band had never played before live, according to Setlist.fm.
I gotta say, as someone that grew up watching Jason Newsted on some of the biggest stages in the world, it’s great to see him still out there. God knows he doesn’t need to ever write new music or play shows ever again, given his time with Metallica, but the dude’s obviously a lifer that wants to just keep playing.
As for the set and his most recent show, the only complaint I would have had walking out of there was that they didn’t play “Nocturnus,” but that’s only because that song whips a copious amount of ass.
