When the series was first announced, it was confirmed that the story would take place eight years after the events of the finale to the prequel trilogy Revenge of the Sith, in which we saw the titular Jedi bringing an infant Luke Skywalker to his Tatooine homestead to live with his uncle Owen Lars and his wife Beru, with Ewan McGregor confirmed to be reprising the role while other cast members have slowly been announced in the years since.
Alongside the returning stars, the cast for the series will include Nanjiani, Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), Kang, Varma, Rupert Friend (The French Dispatch), Jackson Jr., Simone Kessell (Of Kings and Prophets) and Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems).
Interestingly, there was speculation in October 2019, a few months after the series was announced, that Joel Edgerton (The King) would reprise the role of Lars after the Golden Globe nominee played coy about returning in an interview out of fear of the House of Mouse while also expressing excitement at the possibility. Today’s announcement marks the first confirmation he’s joined the cast to return alongside Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker and Bonnie Piesse as Beru, the former of whose casting was revealed in December.
The limited series is being scripted by Joby Harold (Army of the Dead) with Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) serving as director and executive producer alongside Harold, McGregor, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Tracey Seaward (The Queen) and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) while Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President of Production Jason McGatlin is set as co-producer.
Before it became a series, McGregor’s return as Kenobi was originally being planned for a standalone film with Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close) set in the director’s chair, though after the second standalone Star Wars venture, Solo, failed at the box office, the studio elected to put all spin-off movies on indefinite hold.
Production on Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to begin shooting next month.
