‘Coming Soon: Report: The Last of Us Remake Is ‘Nearly Finished,’ Could Release in 2022’

Rumors that Sony had begun looking into remaking the hit 2013 game The Last of Us have been popping up for some time. Now, however, it seems as if the game could be making its way out by the end of the year.

According to a recent tweet from industry insider Tom Henderson (via VGC), The Last of Us remake is “nearly finished,” and could be released “during the latter half of 2022.” The tweet comes just a day after Naughty Dog’s Creative Director and co-president Neil Druckmann delivered a message at Sony’s CES 2022 press conference in which he revealed that the developer was working on multiple game projects.

While it’s still entirely unclear whether or not a The Last of Us remake is on the way, rumors surrounding the remake have been popping up for some time. A Bloomberg report from last April noted that Sony had begun the process of trying to remake the game for the PlayStation 5, with PlayStation’s Visual Arts Service Group initially tasked with working on the game before the project was given back to Naughty Dog to handle.

Henderson also briefly touched on The Last of Us Part 2‘s multiplayer, noting that he had heard that it — and a director’s cut for The Last of Us Part 2 — are also coming, although he wasn’t sure when. This comes after reports popped up early last year that the studio was developing its “first standalone multiplayer game” which many believe to be a more expanded version of The Last of Us Part 2‘s long-delayed online mode.
