Florence Pugh Recalls Filming Brutally Emotional ‘Midsommar’ Sequence [Photo]

“I found a true sisterhood.”

Before Florence Pugh became our cooking obsession over on Instagram, she won our hearts as Dani in Ari Aster‘s followup to Hereditary, Midsommar, which sent her to Scandinavia to “visit a rural hometown’s fabled Swedish mid-summer.”

In the film, Pugh’s Dani suffers the loss of her entire family at the hands of her sister. Her boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor), on the brink of breaking up with Dani, now feels forced to invite his girlfriend to join in on his previously-planned bro-trip to Scandinavia. While she’s treated like a third wheel throughout, this is actually her fairytale.

The story builds up to a now-iconic, emotionally-charged sequence in which Dani, surrounded supported by locals, releases all of her anguish in a heft of heavy breathing, sobbing, and wailing. Revisit it here.

For us viewers, it’s a single minute that’s excruciatingly uncomfortable. For the actors, it was an emotional few hours, one that transcended “work” and took Pugh and her costars into an emotional depth they may never experience again in their careers.

Pugh recalls shooting this scene with an extremely personal photo and story to go along with it this week on Instagram. This is a glimpse inside one of those great moments in horror history that we aren’t often allowed into. Relish this one…
