Millennium Media has teamed with Icelandic writer/director Erlingur Thoroddsen to produce a new horror film titled The Piper.
Based on the Pied Piper fairy tale, the film focuses on a young composer who is commissioned to complete her late mentor’s final concerto. Unfortunately for her, she soon discovers the melody is tied to a sinister force and playing the music comes with deadly repercussions.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story in an exclusive last evening after the Golden Globes. Jeffrey Greenstein was quoted by the publication saying:
“We’re excited to bring the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin to life in a way that’s never been seen before. Set in the rich world of orchestral music, this film will establish The Piper as a terrifying horror icon whose melody will send chills down audiences’ spines for ages to come.”
Thoroddsen wrote and directed a series of short films before his feature debut with the boogeyman-inspired Child Eater followed by Rift, the story of two men whose relationship has ended who become haunted by tragic moments from their past. More recently, he wrote Midnight Kiss, a feature “episode” as part of Blumhouse and Hulu’s Into the Dark series. That film was directed by Carter Smith (The Ruins).
Millennium has primarily been known for their work on action franchises but they began scaling back to smaller budgeted projects after the onset of Covid-19. They are currently shopping the film at the virtual European Film Market.
We love a good, dark fairy tale here at iHorror and the Pied Piper has always been one of those creepy stories with a premise so unsettling that it’s almost hard to believe parents tell it to their children. We will keep you posted on further details about The Piper as they become available.
